Claiming for additional heating costs

When a property is in disrepair this can mean increased energy bills. The additional cost may be claimed as compensation.

Draughts cause heat loss. Heating may need to be left on constantly or additional electric heaters are needed which can be expensive to run compared to central heating.

Where a property suffers from water penetration or dampness heating is often left on in an attempt to dry out the property which incurs extra expense. Dehumidifiers can also be expensive to run. Continue reading

Southwark Commission on Council Housing

The London Borough of Southwark have set up an Independent Commission on the Future of Council Housing in Southwark.

Southwark are the largest council housing in London and the fourth largest in the country, with 39,000 rented and 16,700 leasehold homes. Faced with very important changes in financing and the law from the Coalition, with welfare cuts and major issues around the quality of the stock and the high level of demand, the Council has set up a high profile, independent, and expert Commission charged with exploring the options open to them over the next 30 years. Getting rid of mould

We recently acted for Mr X, a council tenant, who lived in a flat suffering from a severe mould problem. Mr X has two young children, and when he came to see us his wife was 7 months pregnant with their third child. He was extremely worried about the impact of mould on their health. His wife was suffering from respiratory problems during her pregnancy, and he noticed his children were suffering from more coughs and colds. He was anxious the matter was resolved before his unborn child arrived.

Domestic Violence and homelessness

Where a council tenant is at threat of domestic violence or harassment they may be able to secure a suitable transfer through their local authority’s choice based lettings scheme. Following an application the applicant is placed into the relevant band within the scheme and will then bid for properties as they become available.

Having the builders in

If your landlord intends to start repair works on your home here is a summary of what you can expect to happen and also things that you can do to help the repairs run as smoothly as possible.

Access

You must allow access for appointments. Your landlord will need to give you sufficient notice. Usually an inspection will take place first and thereafter arrangements for the actual works are made. If you receive calling cards through your door you should call the number given without delay.
