The Marriage Foundation

A High Court Judge of the Family Division has expressed his concern about the divorce culture in England and Wales.

In The Times on 3 January 2012 Mr Justice Coleridge said that he was

“unashamedly advocating marriage as the gold standard for couples where children are involved”.

He went on to say that he wished to avoid a moral crusade but had formed a Foundation to promote marriage. The Marriage Foundation is supported by Baronesses Deech of the Bar Standards Board, Shackleton of Payne Hicks Beach and Butler-Sloss, former President of the Family Division.

Funding of £150,000 is being raised at a time when divorces in England and Wales have increased for the first time since 2003.

The Marriage Foundation will aim to be a source of information on marriage as well as initiating research projects and campaigning for pro-marriage policies.

Sir Paul also told The Times newspaper

“I am not saying that living together is wrong but marriage, though not perfect, is better”.

The political and social researchers’ response to the initiative was generally positive. I would, however, question the originality of the name of this Foundation. A web search will generate several others with the same name, particularly in the USA as well as marriage dating agencies which could lead to some confusion!
